Throughout history Scots have made their mark both at home and abroad. Early Scottish history is peppered with great warrior chiefs like William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.
In 1306 Robert Bruce was crowned king and began the long campaign to consolidate his title and gain freedom for the Scottish nation. The politics of the relationship between England and Scotland was central to the life of Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary ascended the throne of Scotland at less than one week old and ended her short life as a prisoner of Elizabeth I of England.
Scots have not only earned fame as great warriors but have excelled in the arts and as great scientists and engineers. Robert Burns is famed as one of the worlds greatest ever romantic poets, and the works of Sir Walter Scott have enduring popularity. In the visual arts the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh has influenced designers throughout the world.
Many of the inventions fundamental to the industrial revolution have been made by Scottish engineers, such as Thomas Telford and James Watt, while Scottish scientists have played a part in many breakthroughs in modern medicien and biology.
The influence of Scots on world events and world culture is a great today as it ever has been. Sportsman such as David Coultard and Colin Montgomerie are amongst the world's best and in the arts Scotland is as well represented today as in the days of Rabbie Burns. Perhaps the most famous living Scot is Sean Connery who, in the tradition of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, continues to fly the flag for an idependant Scotland.
